The Hotel Alte Post is a historical treasure of the Alpine hotel architecture. Even after the essential refurbishment in the year 2002/2003 the building has kept its original appearance in the local style. The building was built in 1907 by Karl Stemberger and used to be the last stop of the postal carriage between San Candido and the Fischleintal valley. The ground floor of the hotel hosted the post office, from which the name of the hotel derives. But the hotel also was an excursion destination as well as a resting place of many mountaineers and travellers. In 1956 Sepp Innerkofler (the son) bought the hotel, which had been nationalised during World War I, from an Italian company, and turned it into the annex of the Hotel Dolomitenhof.
In 1986 the building was listed as a protected site of historical interest.
In the very individual rooms and suites, still fitted with original pieces of furniture, the guests of the Alte Post experience the real flair of an Alpine mountain hotel, however without missing the 4 stars comfort.
This abstract from the magazine “Sextner” shows the big tradition of the hotel: "In the charming landscape of the Fischleintal valley, in 1906/07 Stemberger built the so-called Postgasthof (Post-hotel) in the style of a Tyrolean farm house. The hotel had 27 rooms, all of them with running water, bath tub, and water closet. Even an own power plant was established to illuminate the rooms with electricity. Three times a day the postal carriage drove from here to Sexten, and for special tours broughams and curricles were ready. On request the baggage of the guests was carried to the refuge Locatelli by a pack animal…”
